Timberside Farms raises livestock with attention to healthy pasture, quality forage, clean water, low-stress handling, and good animal husbandry.

Timberside Farms:

Our Animals

Fainting/Kiko Goats

Brush Management Specialists

At Timberside Farms, our Fainting/Kiko cross goats serve an important role as natural vegetation managers. Goats are uniquely suited to browse plants that many other livestock avoid, making them a practical and effective tool for managing invasive and unwanted woody vegetation.

They are especially valuable for controlling multiflora rose, honeysuckle, briars, brushy regrowth, and other invasive plants that can reduce pasture productivity and make land management more difficult. By browsing these species, goats help reduce invasive pressure, improve access along fence lines and pasture edges, open overgrown areas, and create healthier, more manageable landscapes over time.

Rather than relying solely on mechanical or chemical control methods, we use goats to work with natural processes to restore and maintain the land.

Timberside Farms also offers prescribed goat grazing services for landowners in Henry, Jefferson, and Washington Counties who are seeking a targeted, natural approach to invasive species and brush management.

Our herd consists primarily of Fainting/Kiko crosses selected for hardiness, browsing ability, sound structure, and resilience. Through thoughtful grazing management, we work to reduce dependence on wormers and antibiotics while building a healthier and more durable herd.

Katahdin Hair Sheep

Efficient Forage Users

Katahdin hair sheep are an important part of our multi-species grazing system because they utilize pasture differently than cattle and goats.

While cattle primarily harvest grasses, sheep are more selective grazers that make excellent use of broadleaf plants, tender forage, and smaller vegetation throughout the pasture. Grazing sheep alongside or following cattle allows us to use available forage more completely, distribute grazing pressure across a wider range of plant species, and encourage a healthier balance within the pasture.

Like all grazing animals, sheep help recycle nutrients back to the soil through manure, supporting soil biology and long-term pasture productivity.

Katahdin sheep are also well known for their hardiness, strong maternal instincts, and low-maintenance characteristics, making them an excellent fit for regenerative and pasture-based systems.

Timberside Farms occasionally offers direct-to-consumer lamb as well as breeding-quality Katahdin sheep.

Cattle

Building Soil from the Top Down

Our cow-calf herd plays a vital role in both livestock production and land stewardship.

As cattle move through our rotational grazing system, they harvest forage, distribute nutrients, and help cycle plant material back into the soil. Not every blade of grass needs to be consumed. Trampled forage becomes valuable organic matter that protects the soil surface, feeds soil biology, improves moisture retention, and gradually returns nutrients to the pasture as it decomposes.

Through managed grazing, cattle help maintain productive pastures while supporting long-term soil health and resilience.

At Timberside Farms, cattle are not simply a livestock enterprise. They are an important part of a management system designed to improve the health of both the land and the animals that depend on it.

Red Wattle Pasture Pigs

Pigs as Partners in Stewardship

At Timberside Farms, we raise heritage-breed Red Wattle pigs, a hardy breed known for excellent meat quality, strong maternal instincts, and adaptability to outdoor environments.

Our pigs are raised outside with access to sunlight, fresh air, grass, roots, grubs, mud, and room to roam. They are able to root, wallow, forage, and express the natural behaviors that make pigs such unique and intelligent animals.

Pigs also serve an important conservation function on the farm. Their rooting behavior creates valuable soil disturbance that can be directed toward specific stewardship objectives. Under careful management, pigs can be used to prepare sites for future plantings, manage unwanted vegetation, incorporate organic matter, and help restore areas that need targeted disturbance.

Rather than viewing rooting as damage, we view pigs as another biological tool that can help us work with natural processes while improving the productivity and health of the land.

As with every livestock enterprise at Timberside Farms, the goal is not simply to raise animals. It is to use livestock as partners in stewardship while producing quality food for local families.

Red Wattle pork is available direct-to-consumer as whole or half hogs.

Thanksgiving & Christmas Turkeys

A Holiday Tradition

Each year, Timberside Farms raises turkeys for families who want to serve a locally raised bird during their Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations.

Raising holiday turkeys allows us to connect directly with customers who value local food, family traditions, and knowing where their food comes from. Our turkeys are raised with attentive daily care and have opportunities to forage, explore, and express natural behaviors.

For many families, a holiday turkey represents more than a meal. It is a gathering around the table, a celebration of tradition, and an opportunity to support local agriculture.

Because turkey production is seasonal and quantities are limited, customers are encouraged to reserve their birds early each year.

Donkeys

Guardians of the Flock

Our donkeys have one of the most important jobs on the farm: protecting livestock.

Donkeys live alongside our goats and sheep and serve as guardian animals against potential predators. Naturally alert, observant, and protective, they help create a safer environment for more vulnerable livestock while providing peace of mind to the people caring for them.

Their presence helps reduce stress within the flock and provides an additional layer of protection as part of our overall livestock management strategy.

While many visitors appreciate their personality and curiosity, our donkeys are hardworking members of the farm team whose role contributes directly to animal welfare and responsible livestock stewardship.

Coturnix Quail

Small Birds, Big Nutrition

In addition to our pasture-based livestock enterprises, Timberside Farms raises Coturnix quail, a productive and efficient bird known for nutrient-dense eggs and flavorful meat.

Unlike our grazing livestock, quail are managed in a controlled environment designed to support bird health, consistent production, and protection from predators. Their management needs differ significantly from larger livestock species, allowing us to provide specialized care while producing a variety of products for our local community.

Quail offer an excellent opportunity for families to access locally produced food in a small package. Their eggs are nutrient-dense, visually distinctive, and popular among customers looking to diversify their food choices while supporting local agriculture.

Why We Raise Quail

Coturnix quail are an excellent fit for small-scale local food production. They mature quickly, produce consistently, and provide both eggs and meat while requiring relatively little space.

Raising quail allows Timberside Farms to diversify the products available to our community while helping more people become connected to the farms that produce their food.

This approach fits our broader goal of supporting local food systems, responsible stewardship, and a more resilient rural community.
